Little ways Veganuary can help you stay fit all year round!
We may be ready to begin our healthy body workout with the arrival of the new HKMX collection, but these days it’s pretty tough to navigate the world of healthy food, right? Do superfoods actually exist, is raw really better and, well, the jury’s still out on red wine (we’re hoping it comes out on top!). Read on for five easy and delicious ingredients to stock up on to help you feel better, live better and stay fit and healthy.
Whilst Veganuary is over, the conversation of ‘to be or not to be’ when it comes to veganism goes on. Although being vegan used to be synonymous with being a tricky eater, nowadays many of our fave celebs have chosen to live the animal-free lives, be it for ethical or health reasons; we all remember when Khloe K swore that cutting dairy out of her diet helped her slim down.
But what do vegans eat? A lot, apparently, including fried ‘chicken’ thanks to a new Hackney hotspot called Temple of Seitan, and it’s not all about just cutting down the animal products either. Some people just want to mix it up a bit when it comes to food! People want to do things for different reasons, so whether you’re an omnivore, herbivore, or another type of vore, there’s nothing wrong with doing like the A-list tribe and trying something new in your day-to-day eating routine. With that in mind, we’ve put together a little list of products that are easy to buy and easy to swap with the things that are already in your cupboard!
If you want to cut out dairy, the first line of attack is a substitute for milk, and the good thing is there are so many options available! Soy is the most common, but there are also some super tasty options that are much more environmentally friendly – our favourites are coconut and almond milk. Both widely available, they make delicious alternatives to dairy and almond milk can even be made at home with some almonds, a blender and muslin! Some other great alternatives to milk include rice and oat milks, so get exploring and find one that works for you! If only it were as easy to find a cheese that fits the bill.
Whilst margarine is often regarded as the healthier option (thank Flora for that one) it’s still made with a percentage of buttermilk – not the perfect solution if you’re trying to cut down on your dairy! Luckily, a lot of supermarkets and smaller stores sell butter-like spreads that are made entirely from vegetable fats like olive and avocado oil, and taste just as yummy on a toasted bagel! Plus, some of our favourite beauty editors have sworn that going dairy-free helps our skin out, so we’ll take the avo spread any day!
Whilst most pasta is vegan-friendly, a lot of white pasta and noodles are made from eggs, so it’s best to steer clear, or at least check the label before you pop it in the basket. On the other hand, wholewheat/brown pasta is almost always made egg-free, as well as being much less processed and therefore much healthier in general.
Alongside choosing the colour of pasta, it’s also difficult to know up from down when strolling down the bread aisle. The problem with a lot of bread isn’t the use of butter, milk or eggs, (which only some of them use) but more the additives, which aren’t only bad for vegans but are not so great for the human body on the whole! Luckily though, bagels are vegan nine times out of 10 vegan, and though smearing cream cheese all over that bad boy might be out of the question, they’ll still be just as tasty topped with some sliced banana and cinnamon.
Non-dairy ice cream
If like us ice cream is a significant part of your Netflix-night-in and you can’t bear to catch up on your favourite show without it, don’t fret! There are now so many vegan options available to stuff your face with whilst you fall in love with Mr Darcy all over again (Colin, of course). From whipped, frozen coconut to cashew nuts, head to the frozen section of the supermarket and you might find a whole range of dairy-free treasures you never noticed before, so grab a spoon and get stuck in! We’ll be running off the sugar in Doutzen inspired sportswear…
