Five delicious smoothie ideas to get you moving and grooving!
The sun is finally starting to rear its head again, which means we no longer have to cover our bodies head-to-toe with all things fluffy and warm. Yay! Instead, we’re thinking about ditching the chocolate and donning our new HKMX sportswear to get active for those summer months. Now it’s possible to hit the ground running in just a sports vest and leggings (bye, bye fleece!), we’re consciously thinking about what we put into our bodies as well as what we do on the outside.
The problem is it’s pretty hard to navigate the world of the ‘healthy’ smoothie nowadays, especially as many store-bought options use apple juice (which is chock full of sugar) as their base! Homemade is always the best option, so to help you out here are five smoothies jam-packed with amazing ingredients to help you feel good inside and out!
Kickin’ kale and banana
Okay, okay, we know kale is the go-to green for all of us wanting to get healthy, but it really is super tasty not to mention packed with vitamins and all the good things we need to keep us going. Whilst we’re probably used to kale in citrusy or savoury recipes, when it’s paired with banana, almond milk and a tiny bit of honey this smoothie makes for a different kind of green machine we know you’ll love!
1 medium banana, 1 cup of chopped kale (uncooked), 1 cup of almond milk and honey/stevia to taste. Simple as that! Make sure you blend the kale until it’s smooth.
Fiery ginger, carrot and turmeric
We all know how amazing ginger: it’s cold-fighting, anti-inflammatory and helps to kick nausea out the door (yes, really!). But paired with the spicy, free-radical-fighting turmeric, it’s a match made in heaven! Made from a bunch of citrusy superfoods that aim to fight any symptoms of sickness, this smoothie is the perfect accompaniment for lazy Sunday mornings spent hanging around in cosy PJs trying to forget about your Saturday evening antics!
½ cup of carrot juice (either homemade or store bought – try and get cold-pressed!) 1 banana, 1 pineapple, ½ tablespoon of fresh ginger-grated, ¼ teaspoon of ground turmeric, almond milk and a dash of lemon juice.
Sweet spinach and grape
Another one of those green giants we can’t help but think of as savoury, but spinach paired with grape and a lovely helping of coconut milk makes for a deliciously sweet and creamy treat we would never have expected! Spinach remains one of the classic superfoods as it’s full of protein and zinc, and if Popeye is anything to go by it’s sure to help get you super strong just in time for hauling that case, packed with all your beach essentials, to the airport for your summer holiday!
1 cup seedless green grapes, 1 cup creamy spinach, 1 cup coconut milk, plus honey/stevia to taste.
Smooth strawberry, orange and flaxseed
Whilst we’re always being told about all the grains we can add to smoothies and cereals to turn them into superfoods, it’s hard to tell which ones to use and when! If you head to your local health food shop you’re bound to find aisles lined with every type of seed you can imagine, and whilst chia makes for amazing puddings and hemp makes a pretty good addition to a natural protein shake, we’re loving flaxseed as the go-to for a good smoothie. Dubbed one of the healthiest foods on the planet, it’s full of omega-3 and lots of fibre, plus it tastes great too!
A cup of strawberries, a whole orange split into segments (or juice if you’re not sure about the pulp), ¾ cup of plain yoghurt (or coconut yoghurt if you’re skipping the dairy), 1 tablespoon of honey/stevia and 1 tablespoon of flaxseed. Add coconut milk to taste and make it as thick as you want!
Creamy coconut and blueberry
Whilst we love the heavenly combo of coconut and blueberry (it tastes like the inside of a blueberry muffin!) it’s super easy to chop and change this great base with a fruit of your choice! You can also make it a breakfast smoothie of champions by adding some oats in there.
A cup of blueberries (or equivalent), a couple of bananas, 1 cup of coconut yoghurt, 1 cup of coconut milk, a dash of lemon juice and honey/stevia to taste.
And there you have it! So whether you’re still in hibernation mode or not, you can officially start glowing from the inside. Pair the healthy intake of good food with a cheeky purchase of some new HKMX gear and you’re good to go.
